What this quote is saying is that we need to learn how to be disciplined and mannered.  When people hear the word "obedient", they think that they are giving up their freedom or they think that they are giving up control.  I know I have said that a lot in my past entries, but it is true and I can't stress it enough.  The thing is, people need to learn how  to become disciplined because it helps in our everyday life.  Being obedient doesn't necessarily mean that we are obedient to other people.  We need to be obedient to what our hearts tell us is right, to our goals, to our dreams.  We need to be obedient our goals because that is the only way we will ever achieve.  This quote is stating that it is important that obedience is our primary goal.  Once we learn to be obedient, everything else will come a little easier to us in our everyday lives.  This is at least how I interpret quotes about obedience.  I think that they are saying to us that we need to listen to ourselves before we listen to others.  Why?  Because this is OUR life, and not anybody else's.
